Night Fishing

Description

This is the black-crowned night heron's (Nycticorax nycticorax) part of town--namely, an aqueduct. It waits patiently for passing prey. When a fish swims through the small stream, it dashes into its nightly hunt.

Baby Sialia mexicana

Nowhere to Hide

A western bluebird hatchling (Sialia mexicana) has fallen from its nest into an aqueduct. The blue feathers that characterize adults have begun to grow. But he's not old enough to survive on his own. It can fly only short distances, enough for the bushes, but not enough to get out of the aqueduct.
